𝄞 Karaoke Rules & Etiquette 𝄞

Derech Eretz
Remember that Karaoke is not a competition. You are not a superstar singing in front of thousands of screaming fans. (Although talented Karaoke singers have been known to have groupies)

There’s no reason to get upset if your performance isn’t up to snuff, or if someone selects “your” song before you. And never “Boo” any performance, EVER!

No Double Logins
Each singer is allowed to use only one email/user account. If a singer attempts to secure a second spot in the queue by using multiple accounts, their second song will be skipped.

APPLAUD for every vocalist!
It’s hard to get up and sing in front of a bunch of people and everyone deserves a BIG hand for doing it! Support Karaoke and Support each other!

No Pressure
For some people, singing in public is about as exciting as being thrown out of a plane. Dragging someone up and forcing them to sing, when they clearly don’t want to be on stage, is bad form. Audience members who are there just to enjoy the music are as important to a good Karaoke night as the best singers.

Some good-natured encouragement is fine, but never pressure anyone out of their comfort zone.

Leaving Early
Do not ask to be moved up in the rotation because you “have to leave”, “friends are leaving”, “girlfriend has to get up early” etc. This is not fair to everyone else waiting patiently to sing. Everybody wants to go next, not just you.

If you must leave before you are up, don’t just walk out, remove your song requests from the queue so that your name gets removed from the rotation. This courtesy keeps the show moving as time won‘t be wasted calling for absent singers.

Uninvited Singers
Do not come up and join in on someone else’s song while they are singing unless they have previously invited you to do so. Under no circumstances are you allowed to walk up and grab a mic or sing along with the current performer uninvited.

Proper Mic Technique
Hold the microphone close (1-2 inches or 3-6 cm) to your mouth. Do not cover the grill of the mic with your hand, this will cause feedback. Best to hold the mic below the tape. Do not yell or scream into the mic. The level will be adjusted by the KJ so that you will be heard properly. No obscenities. Please respect the equipment: Leave your drink behind and do not hit or drop the mic.

Group Singing
Karaoke is generally for one soloist or a two-person duet. There are two mics available. If your performance requires a second mic, please ask the KJ for it and make sure to return it to the KJ when you’re finished with your song. If you have a special circumstance that would require a larger group to be singing onstage, please be prepared to have everyone share the two mics provided.

Consequences for Rule Violations
Breaking the rules? Oh no! Here are some possible fun (but serious) consequences:

  • You might have to sing a random song chosen by the KJ—maybe something out of your comfort zone!
  • We might ask you to do a quick dance or silly act before your next song.
  • You could be serenaded by the entire audience with a funny song.
  • Repeated rule violations could result in your song being skipped.
  • In extreme cases, you may be asked to leave and could be banned from future karaoke nights.

Remember, we’re all here to have a great time, so let’s keep it fun and friendly!
